We are all certain to die. That means the countdown to death has already begun for everyone. But in ordinary times, we pay no attention to the numbers or sounds of that countdown.

When you get a serious illness, you become aware of the countdown to death—even though you don't know its exact number.

Becoming aware of the countdown, by itself, changes your priorities in life. You come to feel like living only for what truly matters. Idle commotion and killing time become unnecessary.

To live life with care means to live doing only the things that truly matter.

心が満ち足りていること to be content in mind

心が安らいでいること to be at peace

To be content in mind
To be at peace

I think this is what people are really seeking. The things we wish to obtain in everyday life are, in truth, nothing more than means toward reaching these two states. But we tend to forget that, and the means end up becoming the end in themselves.
